PROFESSIONAL ROOF CLEANING IN ROSSENDALE & EAST LANCASHIRE
The valleys, surrounding hills and established residential areas of Rossendale and East Lancashire create conditions where moss, algae and lichen can build up on roofs over time. From traditional stone-built properties to modern family homes, persistent moisture and shaded roof surfaces can encourage organic growth, leaving tiles discoloured and gutters vulnerable to blockages.
At Costello & Son Cleaning Services, we provide professional roof cleaning and roof moss removal across Rossendale and East Lancashire using a careful, specialist approach. We never pressure wash or steam clean roofs. Instead, our Marshall Air System allows us to remove moss manually before applying a professional biocide treatment to help control regrowth. Every roof clean also includes gutter clearance as standard.
SPECIALIST ROOF CLEANING & MOSS REMOVAL SERVICES
Our roof cleaning service is designed to tackle established moss growth while respecting the condition of the roofing materials. We assess each property individually and use a combination of controlled removal, specialist treatment and roofline maintenance.

MANUAL ROOF MOSS REMOVAL
We use the Marshall Air System to carefully scrape moss and loose organic growth from suitable roof tiles. This air-assisted method avoids the force of pressure washing and provides a controlled approach to clearing heavily affected roof surfaces.
LONG-LASTING BIOCIDE ROOF TREATMENT
Following the initial moss removal, we apply a professional biocide treatment to target remaining biological growth. The treatment continues working after application, helping reduce the return of moss, algae and lichen while gradually improving the appearance of the roof.
GUTTER CLEARANCE WITH EVERY ROOF CLEAN
Moss falling from a roof can collect in gutters and restrict rainwater drainage. We include gutter clearance with every roof cleaning project, removing accumulated debris and addressing accessible blockages to help keep the roofline functioning correctly.
OUR SAFE ROOF CLEANING METHOD FOR LANCASHIRE PROPERTIES
Roofing materials vary considerably across Rossendale and East Lancashire. Traditional stone terraces, older slate-covered houses and modern tiled properties all require appropriate handling, particularly where surfaces have experienced years of weather exposure.
Rather than applying high-pressure water, we assess the roof covering and use the Marshall Air System to remove moss mechanically where suitable. This helps limit unnecessary disturbance to the roof tiles, joints and surrounding materials.
Once the main growth has been removed, our biocide treatment addresses residual organic contamination that manual scraping alone cannot eliminate. The final gutter clearance completes the process, providing homeowners with a thorough roof cleaning service focused on careful moss removal, longer-term maintenance and protecting the roof's condition.

ROOF CLEANING QUESTIONS FOR ROSSENDALE & EAST LANCASHIRE HOMEOWNERS
Homeowners across the region often want to know how moss can be removed without damaging roof tiles, particularly on older properties. Here are answers to some common questions about our approach.
Why is roof moss a concern in Rossendale and East Lancashire?
The region's rainfall, shaded valleys and tree-covered residential areas can encourage moss growth on suitable roof surfaces. Heavy accumulations may retain moisture and contribute to blocked gutters, making periodic roof maintenance worthwhile.
Is manual roof moss removal suitable for older Lancashire properties?
It can be suitable for many older tiled roofs, provided the covering is in an appropriate condition. We assess the roof before cleaning and avoid using pressure washing or steam cleaning.
What is the Marshall Air System?
The Marshall Air System is specialist equipment used to assist controlled manual roof moss removal. It allows us to scrape away established growth without directing highpressure water at the roof covering.
Why do you apply biocide after removing the moss?
Manual removal clears the bulk of visible moss, but biological growth can remain on the roof surface. A professional biocide treatment helps control this residual growth and slow its return.
Does your roof cleaning service include gutter clearing?
Yes. Gutter clearance is included with every roof clean, helping remove moss and debris that could otherwise restrict rainwater drainage.
Will the roof look completely clean immediately?
The removal of heavy moss produces an immediate improvement. However, some discolouration, algae and lichen may take longer to respond to the biocide treatment, so the roof's appearance can continue improving over time.
Can you clean slate and concrete tiled roofs?
We assess slate, concrete and clay tiled roofs individually. The suitability of cleaning depends on the roof's condition, accessibility and construction, and we will recommend an appropriate approach.
Which areas of Rossendale and East Lancashire do you cover?
Our roof cleaning coverage includes Rawtenstall, Haslingden, Bacup, Accrington, Blackburn and Darwen, as well as surrounding communities. Contact us with your postcode to confirm availability and arrange a quotation.
